[White Center - South Seattle] - As an outcome of our summer Minority Business and Youth Alliance participation with King County, Juvenile Court, Community Services Program, New World Communications is now engaged with teaching urban youth and local communities how to develop their own community-based resources using the power of new low-cost web television. We are featuring the use of a revolutionary new, low-cost ultra-compact web television camera called The Flip Video Camcorder from Pure Digital.

In this project, as part of their journalism class, and working jointly with excellent instructor Ann Magyar, students at New Start Alternative School are outreaching to and developing mutually beneficial relationships with minority businesses in downtown White Center at the same time that they are taught to practically apply marketable marketing communications skills.

Students are being taught to produce a video magazine featuring provocative stories that promote these small businesses. Once more positive relationships between youths and local businesses are established, it will be easier for students to find jobs working with these business in the summer. In addition, a whole new world of career possibilities opens up as student acquire power communications skills important to the economic future of our region. Learning digital arts and doing something positive and creative is also great for downtown White Center image as a neighborhood.
